Ontario's New Tire Stewardship Program affects Ontario Members as of Sept. 1, 2009

All Canadian Transportation Equipment Association Ontario Members:
The following program has come to the attention of CTEA staff.  This program is a mandatory requirement for all Ontario domiciled companies  who import tires, whether for installation on new or used vehicles, or who import vehicles with new tires installed into the province of Ontario.  Note that this is for all new tires imported into Ontario, not just from outside Canada.

Ontario Tire Stewardship (OTS) is an Industry Funding Organization  (IFO) implementing and operating the approved Used Tires Program, a province-wide scrap tire solution for On-road and Off-road tires supplied into the Ontario market, diverting them away from burning for fuel and landfilling to 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle)  processing and uses. Registration has begun for the Program, which officially launches September 1, 2009.  For details of this program please go to the OTS website at https://www.ontariots.ca/

For Stewards, such as vehicle manufacturers, this program includes an obligation to collect a mandatory fee per tire, including GST, that must be remitted to the OTS along with a report each month.  The fee is dependent on tire size per the Guidebook.

We have attached the Steward Guidebook which provides all key information required by manufacturers importing new tires, etc.

If you have questions please contact the OTS directly via their website and designated contacts.

We know that this is short notice and do apologize, but unfortunately CTEA was not included in the consultation process leading to this program.

Regards,
Don Moore, P.Eng.

The cost  of compliance and information labels increased on June 15, 2009.

Recent increases in raw material costs have forced the CTEA to increase the cost of compliance and information labels. "Like our members, we have to reluctantly pass on certain costs to our customers," says Don Moore, CTEA's Executive Director. "Our labels are one of those special raw materials where we have no options. A 30% increase is unprecedented but necessary to cover our costs. Our last label program increase took place in August 2006 and it was modest in comparison."

Please contact Stan at the CTEA office to get the new order forms at 519-631-0414 or sdelaney@atminc,on.ca.
